uninhabitable house being rented in town? (944 views)

Yes its long so don’t read if your lazy and planning to point that out anyways.

This is just a random question regarding an old old old house in our little town where I live. Briefly, very briefly we rented out this little house while we were waiting for our new home to be finished (ended up taking three months longer then estimated by contractors) It is over a hundred years old now and the addition that was added had a saggy roof that leaked in bad weather. The toilet and tub (which i’m sure are as old as the house) also needed to be replaced as they were rusted out and the toilet didn’t work properly. Well they were cemented into the floor when they laid down the concrete floor so they will never be able to be replaced unless jack hammers are brought in.

Much worse is the fact that the gas pilot light is in the dirt cecellar under the house. The cellar door was covered in cement so they dug a hole under the side of the house. Obviously the gas company found it unsafe to enter so they will not turn it on. As well as the water heater is blown and ended up flooding the neighbors basement as the landlord neglected to replace it or have the water shut off during the winter. (there is not enough heat retained for winter inhabitants)

anyways we moved out two years ago once our house was finished being built but now they are moving more renters in with out doing repairs, (it has been vacant since we moved) which ultimately the house should be torn down it is in such disrepair.

The land lord was told that water would never be turned on again to the house by the county but somehow he has convinced the new renters that he will get water in there.

We never went to the board as unfortunately the landlord is family and we didn’t want to cause problems but i am kind of worried now that strangers are moving into a house which two years ago should have been condemned. Ultimately i can see a big lawsuit against the landlord happening.

Can the house be reported and by whom? They appear to do be doing some repairs to the roof (its been really wet and rainy) but of course there are no permits or anything to make this legal.

What do you guys think? Again I am just curious as to what can and can’t be done. Not saying that i am going to go out and report I just don’t know the laws pertaining to this kind of thing and am curious.

It really isn’t my problem and i’m aware it doesn’t affect me, i am just curious and suprised the county hasn’t done anything about it which leads me to suspect they don’t know what is going on.
    This is in alberta canada,

Like i mentioned land lord is family and doesn’t live in town so we know no repairs have been made.

Secondly the whole house had cement poured for flooring, there is no carpet or anything through out the house. It could be repaired but it would cost more then the house is worth.

FIL maintains the water in town and he is the one that shut of the water and because the water heater is beneith the house and can’t be reached except by a small hole that was dug under the side, it is impossible to get that one out and a new one in with out digging up the whole side of the house.

Can the house be repaired? Probably. But has it? no.

    1. GEEGEE says:

yes, in a single word you are being selfish. If your dad feels an obligation to help his son, even if he is a deadbeat, why add to that burden? If you really feel that your dad deserves more than a rental apt and a difficult struggle, encourage him to let your brother fend for himself but don’t hold your hand out and demand equal funding. Your gastric bypass is your desire, which can get the same results via weight watchers (I lost 160 pounds there so it can be done and 16K buys alot of fruit and veggies).
